VINCENT VAN CLOTH.
The palette of a painter is a source of inspiration. One artist in particular has inspired me: Vincent van Gogh. Over the course of ten years, he painted over 900 paintings. Painting materials were not cheap, and Van Gogh was often strapped for cash. When Van Gogh finds himself with no canvas in 1890, he turns to a curious substitute – a cloth.
Vincent van Cloth tells the unique story of an artist who painted several paintings on tea towels. A collection of hand-woven cloths in the colours of Van Gogh’s painter’s palette, ranging from the dark shades of Nuenen to the dazzling bright hues of Paris and the Provence.
Nuenen
In Nuenen, Brabant Netherlands, Vincent van Gogh started experimenting with colour nuances and colour contrasts. Van Gogh had done many colour studies and put this into practice during his stay in Nuenen. In Nuenen Van Gogh also experimented with different lighting effects indoors.
Provence
Van Gogh's paintings from Arles have a beautiful colour intensity. Since Paris he turned his back on the realistic colour palette and works day in and day out on new paintings. He is very enthusiastic about his own creativity. His work from Arles surpasses all his earlier work in quantity and quality, it is Van Gogh's most creative period.
For my graduation project, I wrote the book Vincent van Cloth. A book that is full of stories about Vincent van Gogh, his colour palette and details of his paintings. This book also tells shows the design process of the cloth collection, from sketch to dyeing the yarn.
